How the Test Works
The tool plays a pure tone that rises in pitch from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Note the frequency shown when the sound disappears. Young adults often hear up to 16 to 18 kHz, and the upper limit declines with age. See the hearing range article for background.
Instructions
- Use headphones in a quiet room.
- Set volume low then raise slightly.
- Press Start and watch the display.
- Mark the frequency where you stop hearing the tone.
Important Notice
This is an entertainment tool, not a medical test. Speakers and headphones limit results. If you have trouble hearing or ringing in your ears, see a professional. Read the WHO guidance on hearing loss.
