First Steps After Water Exposure
Stop using the phone for a moment and wipe the outside with a lint-free cloth. Remove the case. If a liquid contact warning appears on the Lightning or USB-C port, do not charge. Tap the phone gently against your hand with the port facing down to let liquid fall out. Apple's official advice is available at the Apple iPhone support page.
Use the Water Eject Sound
Place the iPhone speaker down, set volume to around 65 percent, and press start on the tool above. Run 30 seconds and repeat. The tone shakes water out of the bottom speaker grille. Keep the ringer on and make sure the phone is not in silent mode because silent mode can block some sounds, although browser audio generally still plays.
What Not to Do with an iPhone
- Do not use rice.
- Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun or compressed air.
- Do not insert cotton swabs or paper into the port or grille.
- Do not charge the phone until it is fully dry.
Letting the phone air dry in a well-ventilated place for several hours is the safest approach.
When to Visit a Repair Shop
If sound is still muffled after a day, if the phone restarts, the screen shows spots, or the camera fogs, get it inspected. Corrosion from salt or sugary liquids needs professional cleaning. Check our drying guide and muffled speaker fix for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does iPhone have a built-in water eject feature?
Apple Watch does. iPhone does not have a one-tap eject, so a sound tool like this is a popular alternative.
Can I charge my iPhone after getting it wet?
Wait until the port and phone are completely dry. Charging a wet phone can cause corrosion and short circuits.
Is the bottom speaker the one with water?
Usually yes, because the bottom grille is open to the outside. The earpiece at the top can also collect moisture.
Does water resistance protect from all liquids?
No. Resistance is tested in fresh water. Salt water, soap, juice and hot water can damage it.
